Merlin the Magical Clown

Once upon a time, in the little Village of Highland Falls there was a Magical House set forth upon a very steep hill where soon to be, a Magical Clown would live, who would come to be known by the name of Merlin.

As a small child, Merlin always loved to watch Clown's chuckle and do funny things to make him and other children laugh. Merlin knew that one day his dream of entertaining children would come true, and he would be able to make other children laugh and smile. But still, he knew that there were many secrets to the Art of Clowning that he must learn… So as time went on he would watch Clowns in the Circus and Parades and giggle as they went by, saying to himself “This is what makes us smile, by golly this is it. I will be a Clown, Yippee!”

T hen one Halloween night, Merlin decided to dress up as a Clown. He went to the local Thrift Shop and bought all sorts of old clothing with bright colors and baggy pant's. He even found shoes that were so big he could put both of his feet in one. He raced home and began to paint his face with rosy cheek's and big red lips, with a nose to match. As Merlin stood looking in the mirror, he was amazed, as there before him stood a Clown just like the ones he remembered in the Circus when he was a child.

In the early Halloween evening, Merlin would laugh and smile and would hand out candy to all the local children, enjoying entertaining them. But the best part of all was watching the children smiling and laughing as Merlin would do a funny walk, or tell a Joke. And this became the beginning of the career of “Merlin the Magical Clown.”

The next day, Merlin began gathering up more information about how to become a great Clown. Then, one day, before his eyes stood, "Sassy the Clown." What an honor it was to meet him. Sassy would help Merlin perform magic tricks and explain to him the different forms of entertaining an audience. He showed Merlin where to attend Clown School and where to purchase a professional Clown costume. As time went on, Merlin wanted to make sure that he was as professional as could be as a Clown. Merlin attended a Clown School and took other Clown courses to improve his image. He then became a certified member of “Clowns of America International.” He also became a member of “World Clowns“.

With his newly acquired confidence in Clowning, it was time to buy a new Clown Costume. Pricilla Mooseburger Originals in Minnesota had the perfect Rainbow Clown costume to match his big red shoes from Feather's The Fancy Clown in Florida. A style that Merlin adopted is an "Auguste" Clown style, which is a funny character style Clown.

With all of the preparation now completed, Merlin still had a desire to learn more before venturing out to perform for the public. He thought, “What would a Clown be without balloons?” We can all blow up a balloon, of course, but how do we make those little doggies, swans, and so much more that Clowns do. So, it was back to the courses for Merlin. This time it was Balloon tying. After completing this course, he was making hats, doggies, wands, swords, butterflies, and so much more. So, now was Merlin ready to perform in public? Not just yet.

How can you be “Merlin the Magical Clown” and not have some magic in your repertoire? Well, you guessed it, back to the Classes of Magic, where Merlin would learn to perform basic Clown magic. He learned well, and as of today owns plenty of magic to amaze your eyes and make you shake your heads.

Now there were only a few more things left to learn. One of them is face painting. As your young ones will tell you, face painting is always a lot of fun. This was something that Merlin knew would just come to him. His talent and love of art, he knew, would be an asset. He started with roses, daisies, Tweetie Birds, rainbows, and more. Now, just about anything you can think of can be painted by Merlin, from Cheek Art to Full Face painting.

By now, Merlin thought he was just about there. Then he thought, “There are a few more things I need.” He needed to have a Magical Cart to carry all of his supplies, On top of the buggy, he decided, would be an ideal place to have a Puppet Show and Story Telling. So it was back to the courses again to learn puppetry and story telling. He purchased puppets and some great story telling books. Now, with all of this in place, Merlin decided that the time is right for his first public appearance.

Merlin the Magical Clown’s first performance was at a Carnival in Rockland County, New York. When he was all set up for the Carnival to begin and with a crowd of about 5,000 people in attendance, Merlin's first words to himself were, “It’s Show time!" Now every time Merlin performs, whether it is a parade or birthday party or a carnival, whatever the event may be, you will always hear him say, “It's Show Time" as he starts his performance.

Merlin has performed at numerous events in the New York and New Jersey area. Most of the time you will see him with special guest Clowns "Chloe the Clown" or "Jazzy the Clown" who help with story telling, magic and face painting. One thing that is so important to Merlin the Magical Clown is that all the children have fun and are laughing and smiling, and enjoying the Clowns who are entertaining them. But the most important thing of all is, Merlin will never ever say to anyone at a party or event, “Time is up“ while the children are enjoying emselves and having so much fun. Please let Merlin know if this ever happens you.

This short story was written by me, “Merlin the Magical Clown.” As you may have gathered, it has been a long journey for me over the years to start my career as a Clown. But as long as my journey has been, I realize, when I look down, and see that little one standing there, with that big smile from ear to ear, and he or she says too me, "Hi mister clown, you sure did make me laugh," that it was all worth it.
